  • Neutral news, bad news, and the garden.

    First, the happy garden stuff.

6/29's harvest.  Garlic scapes.  Need to find a way to use them.

Clump of green onions.  Just plant a half dozen or dozen all together in the same hole, and call it good.  Then you can yank them all at the same time.  Just a tiny bit more dirt involved than at the grocery store.  Need to plant a bit more next year than I did this year.

    The cuteness.

Yes, my girl is wearing firetrucks.  What of it?

We went scouting in the local forest for red fir (firewood to keep the house warm) and to see how the huckleberries were doing.

Any wonder I don't want to move away from here?

The huckleberries are probably 2-3 weeks away from being ripe.

We had a picnic on the side of one of the forest service roads.  Kids thought it was so cool.

    Unsweetened strawberry fruit leather.

Slightly sweetened (with corn syrup) strawberry fruit leather.

In jars.  Very yummy.  I ate that one on top.

    Ah yes, my cuddly goofball.

    The bad news.

Hubby got laid off today.  Lucky us.  He'd been there six years, and basically doing two jobs - computer guru/tech and engineer.  Damnit.  We get insurance through July supposedly, and hubby's applied for unemployment unless the state's site went funky on him again.

We have some plans in the hopper.  Hopefully this week we can spiff up the CRV and sell it.  Yes, it's very pretty, but if we want to sell it, we need to do it while the gettin's good.  We can limp along all squished in the Prizm.  We do have some savings, so we're not in dire straits yet.  He's working on his resume and all that jazz.

    Just so darned frustrating.

    In part, because of this.
Yes, the first few are incredibly faint and I think the camera lense needed cleaning.

So, yeah.  Groovy timing, eh?  I still have no strong feelings whether this babe is going to stick or not.  Could go either way.  And you know what?  I'll be okay with it.  Eventually.  Whatever happens.  Until then, driving down the uber-bumpy forest service roads had me with my finger on the window button in case I needed to barf.  That was great fun.

I know the timing is terrible, but congratulations!! <3

I'm disgusted with your hubby's former employer. What a bunch of jerkoffs. I'll be praying for you guys, that everything falls back into place ASAP!

  • WhatASweetPotato

    wow!  congratulations!!!
and I'm sorry dh's company is being so stupid.  I still can't believe after all the insanity that he put up with that he'd let him go.  since it's just a layoff, is there a possibility of a call-back?  J's company in IL did seasonal layoffs but would call most people back each spring when the orders picked back up.

is this going to be a February baby?  this was about the time I got pg with Joe.

  • Mavournin

Oh my HAIL Lanna. That's a lot.

Do you have the option for COBRA? It'll probably be expensive, but take it if you can. Is he getting a severence package?

I'm sorry about the job sitch. And many congrats on the pregnancy!

  • lovelymama24

    Congrats on the pregnancy!

I am sorry about the layoff.

  • LannaM

@Mavournin - I don't know that we'd even want to do COBRA.  When you're spending
more on health insurance than your mortgage...   It may be a temporary
layoff (one of their huge, major projects that was supposed to be like
$5mil, isn't paying their bills), but hubby's looking nonetheless.  The
insurance is supposedly good through July, and he can cash in his
vacation time (heh, something like 180 hours).  I think that's pretty
much his severence.  I might be able to negotiate with my midwife about cost, or if I have to do a UC, well, there you go.  *sigh*  Thing that's going to suck is my inhalers.  Damn gov't wanted the propellent taken out of Albuterol, so of course the pharmaceutical company re-patented it and instead of $7-$10, the cost, with insurance, is $25 a freakin' inhaler.  May be time to call up the pharma co and complain and see if they'll give me a few or something...

And we have too much money (hah!) in savings for food
stamps, medicaid *might* be an option for the kids and I, and I'm just
not sure whether I'd want the WIC monkey on my back.  Good thing I've
got my pantry though.  Just have to get more creative.  Not exactly what we needed right now.  Oh well, nobody ever said life was easy.

  • HennyPenne

    oh Lanna!!!

    (((hugs!!!)))

I'm so sorry about your husband. it's simply disgusting how they worked him.

and I'm sorry to say - not surprised at all about the baby. I knew it was only a matter of time. you're about the coolest mom I know, what baby wouldn't wanna join you!?  <3 congratulations!! (even if you're in shell shock at the moment... I still think it derserves a big old cheer)

about the job - that sucks. it really does! but if anyone can get through a lay off and still manage to run the household almost like it never happened - you can.

I have no clue what. but if there was anything i could do.... I am here for you, friend. and hopefully you  know my well enough to know I mean that.

  • sarahmcdon

Wowee!!  Congrats on the pregnancy!!  That's awesome news!  Bad timing but I'm sure you'll figure it out cause you're smart like that : D

  • juniper583

    ((((hugs)))) and Congrats!!!

  • Wolfmeis

I am so sorry about your dh being laid off.  Mine was as well (as I think you know) and we hunkered down for an entire month or so.   Things are looking better here and I strongly suspect things will get better for you too!    This is where people like us go --- YAY from strong pantry habits.

You're fabulous and you guys WILL persevere.
